My intention in creating original contemporary paintings is to
create a visual state of being and becoming. I create events in my
paintings allowing the viewer to take a journey into the realms of an
ambiguous terrain. They are abstract paintings based on personal
experiences and cultural references ranging from Gothic and
modern architecture to social revolutions and warfare. The latter
celebrating the plight of the human spirit.
The writing is on the wall; I have come to develop what I am
revealing to be Renovation paintings. These paintings are
comprised of custom-made wood frames resembling a facade,
attached eclectic metals, impasto acrylic/oil brush and pallet knife
strokes and the occasional human form. In an essence, the metal
resembles human qualities by surviving its changing surface
before coming to rest. When I bring together these metal variables
and the human form exhibiting lines of splendor or the obscene, I
juxtapose the relationship of strength and fragility. The qualities of
these movements, shapes and colors are in an order of hierarchy
supporting the message in its finality giving way to a painting rich
in color, texture and depth.
I have a methodical approach in that once the concept is formed, I
layout the materials and bridge the commonalities of my elements
by way of processing a related theme for my work. The
transformation or renewal of my subject matter is my initial
underlying thought process. The process continues with the
layered fusion of brilliant color intermingled with previous
applications of paint showing signs of expunction, struggling to
survive for its own place within the composition. This confluence
with geometric patterns, linear design and discontinuous cryptic
typography shed light on the triumph and grief succumbed by the
human spirit.
